Webinar ‘Use of Internal and External Data in Predictive Analytics Supported by Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence'

On February 21, 2024, IOTA had the pleasure of hosting another high quality digital event as part of its 2024 Work Programme Technical Activities. The Webinar ‘Use of Internal and External Data in Predictive Analytics Supported by Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence' had speakers from four IOTA member countries - Ireland, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The event was well-received and attended by over 260 tax officials, data scientists, and analysts from 36 IOTA member tax administrations.

During the webinar, participants had the chance to hear about different approaches to using both internal and external data in advanced analytical techniques such as predictive analysis. The event also explored how machine learning and artificial intelligence can support and optimise analysis, enabling participants to examine current and new approaches to analytical techniques and consider how to enhance their own processes and use of internal and external data. Attendees learned about the experiences of other IOTA tax administrations and explored the potential of leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence to enhance tax compliance, detect tax fraud, and improve overall tax administration efficiency.

The topics covered by the presenters were:

  • Italy: “Analysing e-invoice data to detect reclaims of VAT on non-deductible expenses” presented by Daniele Alma;
  • Spain: “Predictive analytics to support nudge techniques” presented by Jaime Arboleda;
  • Ireland: “Machine Learning in the area of Suspicious Transaction Reports” presented by Dr Jaqueline Kirrane & Dr Gerard Power;
  • United Kingdom: “Predictive Analytics in Tax Compliance” presented by Dr Eoin Finnerty.

Webinar participants raised some detailed questions during the Q&A session, and was clear that this developing area is of great interest. All the materials and presentations are now available online and the event recording will be uploaded to the event’s webpage in the near future. This event was led by the IOTA International Taxation Expert Jonathan Heath, with support from his colleague Alexandros Roukalis, and was broadcast live from the IOTA Studio in Budapest, Hungary.
